Alonso Hernandez utilizes multimedia to uplift and empower the struggles of liberatory movements. He uses photography, video and graphic design to share the stories of workers, immigrants, and other communities that are organizing to build people power.

Alonso’s parents first introduced him to the world of community organizing and social movements. His parents organized fundraisers in support of families repatriating a loved one's body and opened the doors of their modest apartment to dozens of newly immigrated friends and family. Their dedication to serving and helping their immigrant community planted the seeds that would later blossom into Alonso wanting to dedicate his own life to the service of others. His parents’ sacrifices as working class immigrants made it possible for Alonso and his brother to be the first in the family to graduate from college. Through these new worlds that were opened to Alonso, he discovered a passion for photography and art as a powerful weapon of self-expression and justice.

Prior to joining PowerSwitch, Alonso worked on the design team at the Sunrise Movement, where he helped develop visual strategy and led design workshops nationally. At the Sunrise Movement, Alonso used multimedia design to strengthen Sunrise’s visual identity and gain popular support for bold climate action. Most recently, Alonso worked as an organizer for Sajid Khan, a public defender running for District Attorney in Santa Clara County. Although the campaign lost at the ballot box, the campaign shifted the county’s perspective on criminal justice by advocating for rehabilitation over mass incarceration.

Alonso holds a BA in Politics from UC Santa Cruz. He currently lives in the Bay Area. Alonso will most likely be seen going on a long walk with his dog, Momo, playing his jarana at a local fandango, or going to a bookstore to buy a book he says he will read once he finishes the dozen books on his shelf.
